🔹 What is MBBS? 


MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery


It is the primary medical degree awarded in India after the successful completion of the NEET-UG entrance exam. It qualifies a candidate to become a certified doctor and practice medicine. 


✅ Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Admission 


To get admission into an MBBS course in India, a candidate must fulfill the following criteria: 

Category Requirement 

Academic Qualification 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology & English 

Minimum Percentage (General) At least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) 

Minimum (SC/ST/OBC)  At least 40% in PCB 

Minimum (PwD - General)  At least 45% in PCB 

Age Requirement Minimum 17 years as of 31st December in the year of admission 

Maximum Age Limit No upper age limit (as per latest NMC/NEET-UG guidelines) 

Nationality Indian citizens, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals 

Entrance Exam Must qualify NEET-UG with required cutoff marks 

 

⏳ MBBS Course Duration 


The total duration of the MBBS course is 5.5 years, which includes: 

Component Duration Details 

Academic Study 4.5 years Divided into 3 phases (pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical) 

Compulsory Internship 1 year Clinical training in various departments 

Total Duration 5.5 years Academic + Internship 

 


🧠 MBBS Course Structure (Subject-wise Breakdown) 

MBBS training is broadly divided into 3 phases and an internship year. Here's how: 


🔹 Phase I (Pre-Clinical) – 1 Year 


  • Subjects:

  • Physiology 
  • Biochemistry 


🔹 Phase II (Para-Clinical) – 1.5 Years 


  • Subjects: 
  • Pathology 
  • Microbiology 
  • Pharmacology 
  • Forensic Medicine & Toxicology 
  • Introduction to Clinical postings starts in this phase. 


🔹 Phase III (Clinical) – 2 Years 


Divided into two parts:

🏥 Compulsory Internship (1 Year) 


Internship is mandatory and divided into various clinical rotations:

Obstetrics & Gynecology 2 months 

Pediatrics 1 month 

Emergency/Casualty 1 month 

Elective/Other departments 1 month 

 


📋 MBBS Course Criteria (Attendance & Examination) 

Requirement  Details 

Attendance Minimum 75% in theory and 80% in practicals in each subject 

Internal Assessment Must secure at least 50% to be eligible for university exams 

University Examinations Held at the end of each phase; includes written, practical, viva 

Passing Criteria Minimum 50% in each subject (theory + practical combined) 

Internship Requirement Must complete entire 1-year internship to be awarded the MBBS degree 

Registration After completion, register with State Medical Council / NMC
